The OMYGA Minority Youth Golf Association began in September 1991, following successful and encouraging meetings between concerned citizens; T. J. Dorsey, D.D.S, Marvin Jackson; Prevention Coordinator for The Center For Drug Free Living; and the Director of Recreation for the City of Orlando, Don Wilson. The idea of a minority youth golf program became a reality.
The recreation Department agreed to provide used clubs, gloves, a field designated for practice, and a golf course to play when available. Videos and tapes were also provided by the City Recreation Department. The Center for Drug Free Living agreed to provide assistance in recruiting youth and to provide drug prevention education. With Dr. Dorsey as Chief Administrator, the program was underway.
Today, we have hundreds of participants ranging from ages 6 to 18 years that have been exposed and or taught to play the great game of golf via our program the OMYGA. Our plan is to further develop the children to qualify for high school and college teams around the country. As a result, we seek scholarships and grants to assist the program and produce quality golf athletes.
